Effective Altruism In Practice: How to do the most good in your life? A talk by Jeff Kaufman '08
Start Date: 4/5/2017Start Time: 4:30 PM
End Date: 4/5/2017End Time: 5:30 PM

Event Description:

In 2009 when Jeff Kaufman ('08) decided to start donating half his income, the only other person he knew who was doing something like this was his wife, Julia Wise (BMC '07). Since then, however, he has found other people who also want to make altruism an important part of their lives, coalescing into a small movement called "effective altruism".

Jeff will talk about his path, from earning money to donate as a programmer at Google, to building a mobile money system in West Africa, along with some of the ways other people have tried to put effective altruism into practice.

He is an active figure in the effective altruism community and keeps a popular blog sharing his ideas on issues like how to make donations more effective. He and his wife Julia Wise donate 50% of their annual income to effective charities. Kaufman graduated from Swarthmore with double majors in computer science and linguistics. Since then, he has worked for several tech companies before settling at Google.
