Cultural competence is having an awareness of one’s own cultural identity and views about difference as well as the ability to learn and build on your experiences. This opening keynote session will take participants through an exploration of different topics related to how we understand and define identity, how privilege and power relate, and how oppression manifests in our society. Participants will engage in meaningful interactive group and individual activities to increase their competency to support marginalized groups. No matter what your position is at Swarthmore, diversity and inclusion is the responsibility of everyone. When you are equipped to respond, challenge and support, you will contribute immensely to a safe and welcoming campus climate for all. The goal is that you will leave this session with added tools, techniques and skills to help you be an active advocate in a world filled with such turmoil.
