Event Description
Selections from the Rare Book Room and the Michael M. Rea Collection of Short Stories.
 
Michael Rea, an art collector, book collector, devotee of the short story, and founder of the prestigious Rea Award for the Short Story, donated a portion of his book collection to Swarthmore College and within this collection are first editions and beautifully illustrated works by Ambrose Bierce, O. Henry, and Edgar Allen Poe, as well as an assortment of prize winning short story anthologies.

Edgar Allen Poe, Ambrose Bierce, and O. Henry may seem at first a curious cluster of writers. However, they were all masters of the American short story who shared a peculiar delight in morbid ruminations and the often grim state of the human condition. Enigmatic men, haunted by their own demons, their capacity to craft stories still draws readers today.

McCabe Library hours:
