Event Description:

Dr. Ed Brockenbrough
"I Had to Figure This Out on My Own”: Understanding and Supporting the Sexual Agency of Queer Youth of Color"

Despite growing concerns in recent years over the plight of queer students in American schools, efforts to make schools more responsive to the needs of queer youth continue to fall short of queer-inclusive sexual health education. The limited access to sex education in public schools persists as the stakes surrounding queer sexual health have intensified, especially for subpopulations like Black queer and trans* youth.

This presentation will draw upon findings from multiple scholarly projects to explore how Black queer youth engage in pedagogical acts that nurture their sexual agency, and it will consider how P-12 educators and other stakeholders can support Black-identified and other queer youth in ways that are culturally responsive and socially just.

Dr. Ed Brockenbrough is an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE). He is also Penn GSE’s inaugural Calvin Bland Fellow, a distinction that recognizes and funds his scholarly work on the educational experiences of young men of color.

Dr. Brockenbrough’s research focuses on negotiations of identity, pedagogy, and power in urban educational contexts, particularly through the lenses of Black masculinity studies and queer of color critique. A book on his work with Black male teachers titled
Black Men Teaching in Urban Schools: Reassessing Masculinity, will be published by Routledge in 2018. He is currently initiating a new book project that will feature his scholarship on the educational experiences of Black queer youth. Prior to joining Penn GSE’s faculty, Dr. Brockenbrough served as a faculty member at the University of Rochester’s Warner Graduate School of Education, where he prepared urban teachers as Director of the Urban Teaching and Leadership program, and where he also facilitated professional development sessions on LGBTQ issues for educators in the Rochester City School District.
