Event Description:
*RGB: Batey Macorix (2013)*

Choreographed & Performed
by Sita Frederick
in collaboration with
Alethea Pace

Sound Design by Desmar Guevara
Text by Nelly Rosario

*RGB: Batey Macorix*
remixes the Afro-Dominican dance and music traditions Gagá and Guloya, and reflects on the politics of black identity, border zones, and 'otherness' within the New York Dominican community.

The project explores the broader implications of these traditions and their evolution, not from a place of uncritical infatuation, but through self-reflexivity, the creative process and in conversation with transnational audiences. Author Nelly Rosario has composed text that borrows from Afro-Dominican and Caribbean vernacular, as well as from the color-building language of digital graphic design tutorials, to highlight the inherent absurdities of racial categorization.

*RGB* offers a meditation on hybridity and blackness, an act of embodied resistance to the blatant xenophobia and racism epitomized in the Dominican Republic's Tribunal Court issued Resolution 0168-13 in September 2013, which strips citizenship retroactively from Dominicans born to migrants without legal status, many of whom are of Haitian and Afro-Caribbean descent.
