End Date: 2/18/2015End Time: 1:30 PM

Event Description:
Sampson McCormick is a talented stand-up comedian, a video blogger, author, and a social activist. He is a witty and respected commentator on matters of race, class and LGBTQ identity. He travels the country performing stand-up comedy, speaking out against homophobia, and sharing his unique perspective on being an openly Gay African– American.

His 2010 book Taboo Village: A Perspective on Being Gay in Black America is a poignant and eloquently written memoir. It explores his own coming of age journey, and discusses how the African-American community deals with homosexuality. Sampson has also been involved in grassroots political advocacy, helping organize the Washington, DC “Metropolitan Network Against Homophobia”, the stated goal of which was to “create awareness of and effectively address social instances of hatred, with a special concentration on homophobia.” He has testified before the DC city council in support of hate crimes legislation. He is a role model for our students who wish to engage in LGBTQ activism.
