Event Description:

"Las Libres… The Story Continues"

Q&A with Verónica Cruz Sánchez, Director of Las Libres to follow Wednesday’s 7pm screening.

The documentary shares the stories of six women who were unjustly incarcerated on charges of homicide in Mexico for having abortions and miscarriages and sentenced to 25-30 years. The film shows the journey of these women and the help they received from the human rights organization Las Libres, which took legal action and built media awareness until attaining their release. The documentary further links the criminalization of abortion in Mexico to broader sexual and reproductive rights struggles in Argentina and the United States.

Veronica Cruz Sanchez is founder and Director of Las Libres, an organization that promotes and defends women’s Human Rights in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. She was recognized as Human Rights Defender of 2006 by Human Rights Watch for the work she has done with Las Libres since 2000.

Aside from her activism around reproductive rights, Las Libres has protested the rising number of Feminicides in the state of Guanajuato by demanding the Mexican Federal government place a Gender Violence Alert on the state.
