Latino Americanidades: Ethnography and Curation of Contemporary Art
Start Date: 3/16/2015Start Time: 4:30 PM
End Date: 3/16/2015End Time: 6:00 PM
Event Description:
Swarthmore's Latin American Studies Program's Latino Americanidades Series begins March 16, 2015 with a presentation at 4:30 p.m. entitled "Ethnography and Curation of Contemporary Art" hosted by Christopher Fraga, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Swarthmore College.

Fraga's talk will introduce some of the questions that spurred his research on the burgeoning contemporary art scene in Mexico City, where he lived and worked from 2007 to 2010. What kind of relationships can we trace, for example, between the cultural and economic processes of globalization on the one hand, and the rise of contemporary art in the metropolitan centers of the global South on the other? Illustrating his discussion with a selection of works by Mexican artists, Fraga will elaborate on some conceptual and practical connections between curatorial practice, the discourses of contemporary art, and ethnographic fieldwork among metropolitan elites and intellectuals.
