Event Description:
Career Panel: Where to from here?

Four people are going to talk about their life paths (so far) outside of academia. Three of them are alumni of the college and one taught here briefly in the 1990s. They will talk about the choices they've made and how they've managed to find jobs. Then the floor will open to questions.

The panelists are: Twan Claiborne ('08) is in his fourth year of teaching. Currently, he is in his first year at York Preparatory School. He teaches English for 9th grade and Jump Start, a program designed to provide extra support for students with learning differences. Casey Ferrara ('14) works at Moss Rehab Research Institute (attached to Einstein Hospital) as a research assistant studying language processing in speakers with post-stroke aphasia (a speech/language disorder caused by damage to certain areas of the brain- typically a stroke or a traumatic brain injury). She administers clinical measures of aphasia, designs and runs and analyzes experiments for patients with aphasia, and reads MRIs from stroke patients, identifying/tracing out areas of damage, and doing basic data analysis/modeling. Nick Gaw '09 is a Sr. Technology Advisor with Avaaz.org, a global movement of more than 42 million people taking action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. During the 2014 midterm cycle, Nick served as the Director of Engineering at the Democratic National Committee, and has had previous roles at Change.org and the New Organizing Institute. Hadass Sheffer is the founder and President of The Graduate! Network, Inc, a non-profit that helps communities support adults to go back to college and graduate! Her work involves raising awareness of the importance of investing in adults who want to complete college, and making sure the partnerships required for the work are in place and successful; the Graduate! approach continues to be effective and evolve to meet new needs and opportunities, her colleagues can be successful and happy in their work, and the organization has the required resources to flourish.

Brought to you by the offices of Alumni Relations, Career Services, Student Disability Services and Learning Resources, the Provost, and the Department of the Linguistics.
