Art, Science & Biodiversity - A Sigma Xi Lecture by Photographer Susan Middleton
Start Date: 2/26/2014Start Time: 7:30 PM
End Date: 2/26/2014End Time: 9:00 PM

Event Description:
Art and science are methods of inquiry, each fueled by a passion for discovery and venturing into the unknown, yet the pathways and methods of communication are distinctly different. In this talk, photographer Susan Middleton will explore the intersection between art and science with a focus on biodiversity and our human relationship with nature. For more than 25 years, she has specialized in the portraiture of rare and endangered animals, plants, sites, and cultures. She will present a portrait of life through images created from 1985 to the present, focusing on her own evolving understanding of biodiversity and re-imagining it in her work, with the aim of communicating this message in a culture where biodiversity is an intangible concept.

There will be a special focus on the realm of marine invertebrates, which is the subject of Susan's next book Spineless: Portraits of Marine Invertebrates, the Backbone of Life to be published by Abrams this coming fall. Susan Middleton was chair of the photography department at the California Academy of Sciences from 1982-1995, where she now serves as a research associate. Her most recent book is Evidence of Evolution (Abrams 2009). Previous books in collaboration with David Liittschwager include Archipelago and Remains of a Rainbow (National Geographic); Witness and Here Today (Chronicle Books). She has produced films and exhibitions in conjunction with her projects. Middleton was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 2009. For more info go to
