Lecture by Susan Bernofsky: "(Re) Translating Kafka's Metamorphosis"
Start Date: 2/6/2014Start Time: 7:30 PM
End Date: 2/6/2014End Time: 9:30 PM

Event Description:
Susan Bernofsky’s new translation of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis was published by W. W. Norton on January 20 of this year. Dr. Bernofsky will speak at Swarthmore College on Thursday, February 6 (7:30 p.m. in Bond Hall) about translating Kafka from the original German, the task and experience of re-translating such a famous work of literature. (Copies of the new edition will be available for sale at the Swarthmore College Bookstore, in the basement of Clothier Hall on the Swarthmore campus. The Metamorphosis is a creepy and thought-provoking tale that begins when Gregor Samsa wakes up to find that he has turned into a huge beetle…)

Bernofsky, an Associate Professor at Columbia University, is a specialist on German literature and culture and on the theory and practice of literary translation. Besides Kafka, she has translated Jenny Erpenbeck, Herman Hesse, Robert Walser, and Emanuel Schikaneder’s libretto of The Magic Flute for an upcoming performance of Mozart’s opera in St Louis—and many others. She writes the Translationista blog and is co-editor (with Esther Allen) of In Translation: Translators on Their Work and What It Means (Columbia University Press, 2013). The talk is sponsored by the Tri-College Faculty Group in Translation Studies with generous co-sponsorship from the German Department of Bryn Mawr College, the Department of Linguistics, and the Russian Program of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Swarthmore. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Sibelan Forrester (610-328-3642, or by e-mail at ).
