It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing
Start Date: 2/6/2015Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Date: 2/6/2015End Time: 3:30 PM

Event Description:

Michael Kandel, with a PhD in Slavic from Indiana University, taught at George Washington University. He translated the science fiction of Stanislaw Lem, and two of those books were nominated for a National Book Award. As an editor at Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, he worked on English translations of foreign literature. He is currently a manuscript editor at the Modern Language Association.

This presentation will include three parts: first, an account of Dr. Kandel’s involvement over the years with literary translations. He has been a translator, a student of translation, a reader of translations, a teacher of translated literature, an editor of translations, a colleague of translators, and an author who has been translated. The second part will offer thoughts and opinions on this activity, trying to be honest about (not diplomatic with respect to) authors, translators, professors, or the speaker himself. As any art, translation works—or does not work—for a variety of reasons that are outside our control and ultimately may not be articulable. The third part will elaborate on one example, in Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, of how the understanding of one word or phrase may affect, globally, how a reader reads a work and how a translator approaches an author.

This is a keynote lecture for the international conference Translational Literature and Translation. For detailed program please see http://works.swarthmore.edu/transnational-lit.

The conference is free and open to the public.
