Event Description:
Enjoy Some Great Harmony for a Good Cause

The third annual “Harmony for the Homeless” concert, an a cappella concert to benefit the Swarthmore Friends Meeting's "Cooking for the Homeless" program, will take place on Sunday, February 9 at 3pm, at the Swarthmore Friends meetinghouse on the Swarthmore College campus.

Harmony for the Homeless will once again be hosted by The Trolley Stoppers, a quartet based in Media. They will be joined by two college a cappella groups: Sixteen Feet (Swarthmore College) and Chaverim (with singers from Swarthmore, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr colleges).

Each of the groups does only "a cappella" singing (singing without instrumental

Sixteen Feet, an all-male group, performs popular music of all kinds, often with a strong beat and sometimes with a humorous twist. Chaverim, which includes both men and women, performs a lively mix of popular and folk music from around the world. The Trolley Stoppers do a little of everything, ranging from Billy Joel tunes to doo-wop to barbershop harmony and madrigals.

All funds raised by the concert will be used to support the Swarthmore Friends Meeting's "Cooking for the Homeless" program, which provides meals to a homeless shelter located on the Philadelphia border in Upper Darby. Once a month, volunteers gather in the Meeting kitchen to make a hot, nutritious meal for between 100 and 200 homeless people. A second set of volunteers then takes the meal to the homeless shelter and serves it there.

The Cooking for the Homeless program, which was started by the Swarthmore Meeting many years ago, gradually spread to other congregations around Delaware County. Now, about 30 churches and synagogues participate, each providing a nutritious meal once a month.

Everyone is welcome. The concert is free, but a donation of $5 for students and $10 for non-students is encouraged. Refreshments will be served after the concert.
