El Canto del Colibrí Film Screening and Lecture

Event Description:
The Jerry Wood Memorial Lecture for 2017 will be given by Marco Castro-Bojorquez, filmmaker and an LGBT and HIV/AIDS activist who fights daily for the civil and human rights of LGBT people as a convener for Venas Abiertas a network of Latinx Living with HIV/AIDS, a member of the United States.

His lecture will follow a film screening of El Canto del Colibrí directed and produced by Castro-Bojorquez.  The first film of its kind, the groundbreaking El Canto del Colibrí features Latino immigrant fathers discussing acceptance of their LGBTQ children. The documentary has played at over 30 international film festivals, including screenings in Ecuador, Mexico, Spain, and throughout the United States. Winner, among others, Best Documentary Audience Choice Award at the CinHomo Muestra de Cine LGBT Valladolid, Spain and Best Documentary by the Jury at l Can [be] Gay: 3º Festival Internacional de Cine LGBTIQ de Canarias, Spain.

Castro-Bojorquez, is active with People Living with HIV Caucus, and is a lead organizer with the coalition of Californians for HIV Criminalization Reform. This group just introduce Bill SB 239, that seeks to eliminate criminal statutes that, in certain cases, allow HIV-positive people to be prosecuted for having unprotected sex. He is also the senior advisor for Corazon Abierto, Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement, MAVEN, and Somos Familia, organizations that work with queer youth and their families in the United States and Mexico.
