Isis and Ethnic Violence in Iraq and Syria / Professor Costantino Pischedda, University of Miami
Start Date: 4/11/2016Start Time: 2:40 PM
End Date: 4/11/2016End Time: 4:00 PM

Event Description:
How do political science theories about civil wars and ethnic conflict help us make sense of ongoing developments in Iraq and Syria? Some dominant theories tend to emphasize individual "materialistic" calculations, but I argue that theories that take politicized ethno-religious identities seriously as powerful drivers of the behavior of individuals, rebel groups and governments shed more light on the two cases.

Shared identity, however, is not always a force for cooperation: in Syria, as in other cases, it is likely to have prompted competition and even large scale fighting between rebel groups trying to mobilize the same ethnic community.
