Math/Stat Colloquium

Event Description:

John Meier Lafayette College Title: Simple Machines, Thurston Paper, and Hyperbolic Geometry Abstract: Simple mathematical models for mechanical systems often lead to interesting geometric objects.

In this talk we will consider two examples—a crank and a couple of robots—in some detail. Via these examples we will be exploring some rather marvelous mathematics: hyperbolic geometry and topological spaces built from squares. I very much mean “we will be exploring” in that I don’t plan on talking non-stop for the whole time … audience participation will be mandatory!
