Stephen Bensch, Prof.of History

"Recording Power: Manuscripts, Memory, and Lordship in a Mediterranean Baronage"

It is often said that the clergy dominated literacy and literate production in the Middle Ages. The survival of the earliest aristocratic archive in Europe, that of the counts of Empúries in Catalonia, challenges this platitude. The survival of this rare non-royal secular archive, virtually unknown until recently, reveals how a lay lord made use of of the "literate mode" for purposes distinct from those of the clergy and deployed literacy for a different type of historical memory.
