Event Description:
The Humans Rights & Atrocities course (PHIL 51) will be holding events for Human Rights Awareness Week.

"Human Rights and Our Failure to Listen" - A discussion on reparative justice after human rights violations by Haverford Professor Jill Stauffer. Professor Stauffer is currently working to create an interdisciplinary human rights curriculum at Haverford College.

Abstract: People who listen to stories about trauma and recovery from human rights abuses may hear things they never wanted to hear. They may also simply fail to hear stories well due to various presuppositions about how the world works, what counts as a stable narrative, or what it is they think they’re listening for. Recovery from trauma involves a lot of work on the part of those who have been traumatized, of course. But it also requires that those who have not been traumatized learn how to hear stories about harm and even to listen for their own failures of hearing.

This talk will take a philosophical look at the difficulties that reside on all sides of this complicated conversation, focusing equally on testimony from traumatized survivors of a wide array of harms and on the reasons why even those who have been trained to listen sometimes fail to hear well.

The event organizer is also collecting donations on behalf of PHIL 51, a group of Swarthmore College students raising money for human rights awareness. These donations will go to Woman for Women International, an organization that helps women in countries affected by conflict and sometimes genocide.  If you would like to donate, please visit the GoFundMe page at: https://www.gofundme.com/g8ym2sek
