Event Description:
Carin Ruff ’87, Executive Director of Cleveland Park Historical Society, will lead two workshops on ancient manuscripts.

9-9:45am -  Carin will talk to us about the theory and practice of abbreviating Latin in antiquity and the Middle Ages, from SPQR to the holy names to the inscrutable scribbles of scholastics. Students will have a chance to test their abbreviation-deciphering skills against the work of early medieval scribes.

12-2pm: Carin will give us a tour of vHMML, an online suite of tools that can be used by faculty to introduce students to premodern manuscripts or by students to teach themselves the history of script. As time allows, we'll also look at some of other major digitized medieval manuscript projects, including the British Library, Swiss monastic libraries, the Vatican, and the collections of the Walters Art Museum.
