Event Description:

"Creating your Own Voice within Improvisation and Composition”
with Noah Jarrett & Dallas Vietty.
Through a process of listening and analysis of progressive jazz composers of the late 60’s (i.e.-Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Sam Rivers), harmonically sophisticated rock (i.e.-Radiohead, Thundercat), and inherent concepts and musical language therein, we will learn how to improvise and compose using some of these innovative musical tools.

This workshop will open up a new landscape of possibilities and perspectives within jazz harmonies, allowing a holistic and personal view of improvisation and composition, within most any genre.

Noah Jarrett was born and raised in New Jersey, as well as New York City. He began study of the electric bass at the age of nine, after five years studying the violin. With initial interests in the many forms of "rock," Noah spent most days after school playing music in his basement with his musician friends.

Noah is an upright bassist/composer for his own sextet, Knu Gmoon Project, a member of a few Brooklyn/NYC outfits including Brooklyn Qawwali Party, a Pakistani/jazz brass band that plays the music of late great Sufi singer, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mamadou Diabate, one of the pre-eminent virtuosos of the kora, and The Inbetweens, an explosive and dynamic electric guitar trio based out of Brooklyn, NY.  Noah presently co-leads Triage, a free jazz saxophone trio out of the Philadelphia/Baltimore area.  Triage plays locally and tours up the northeast a few times a year. Noah has played many clubs and festivals both nationally and internationally over the last 15 years.

A graduate of New England Conservatory with a B.A. in Double Bass Jazz Studies, Noah has studied with some of most innovative jazz musicians of our time: Gary Peacock, Cecil McBee, John Lockwood, Bob Moses, Danilo Perez, John Abercrombie, and George Garzone, to name a few.  Noah teaches upright bass, electric bass, guitar, and a multitude of other instruments and styles.  He resides in Buckingham, PA with his wife and two girls.

Award-winning accordionist and educator Dallas Vietty is one of the most in-demand young accordionists performing jazz and swing in the United States today. Dallas’ unique style comes from his background in the American jazz tradition, as well as deep study and immersion in the European swing tradition of Django Reinhardt (Gypsy Jazz) and the French musette and jazz accordionists.
As band leader of three groups (Hot Bijouxx, Musette Project, Tempus Fugit) Dallas remains very active on the East Coast concert and festival scene. His groups have performed at some of the top U.S. festivals: Djangology NYC, TEDx Philly, Djangoary Festival, to name a few. As a sideman his performances have taken him to legendary venues such as The Iridium Jazz Club NYC, BB King’s Time Square, The Highline Ballroom NYC, and the Philadelphia Kimmel Center Verizon Hall.
Along with his passion as a performer, Dallas is equally dedicated to providing innovative accordion education. Since 2011, he has been conducting workshops and publishing teaching materials for the American Accordion Musicological Society, American Accordionists' Association, Washington Metropolitan Accordion Society, and many more groups. Dallas has been invited 4 consecutive years as teaching artist at the internationally-renowned Django in June summer Gypsy Jazz intensive. In early 2013, Dallas founded the popular online teaching platform RebelReed, which has educated and provided private accordion instruction to scores of students across the US, Canada, Germany and Australia. He holds a position as Visiting Instructor at Lafayette College, and is co-leading a series of master classes in Philadelphia. With his breadth of professional teaching practice, Dallas Vietty has arisen as a foremost expert in the realm of Gypsy Jazz for piano accordion.
