Event Description:

Since the summer of 2012, Elena Tajima Creef has been doing an ethnographic study of the Lakota Sioux Horse Nation in South Dakota. Her lecture will share some of her field work as a participant on the annual Chief Big Foot Memorial Ride--an arduous two week 300-mile prayer ride on horseback that begins on the Standing Rock Reservation and ends at Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The Big Foot Ride has taken place every December since 1986 where Lakota riders dedicate themselves to following in the footsteps of their ancestors. Professor Creef will share the history of this powerful intergenerational ride as well as her own observations as a participant alongside Lakota men, women, and children from Standing Rock, Cheyenne River, and Pine Ridge Reservations.

Elena Tajima Creef is a Professor of Women's & Gender Studies at Wellesley College. She is the author of Imaging Japanese American: The Visual Construction of Citizenship, Nation, and the Body and Shadow Traces: Reading Japanese/American Women in Photograph Archives (forthcoming). She has published widely in Asian American cultural studies, film, and art. Her current project focuses on the powerful return of the Lakota Sioux Horse Nation at a time of environmental, political, and cultural crisis in 21st century America
