Fengshui on Trial: New Approaches to Chinese Environmental and Legal Humanities

Event Description:
What was fengshui 風水? How did it work in imperial China and what was the state’s relationship to it? Did fengshui protect natural environments? Why was fengshui so commonly invoked in lawsuits in late imperial China? This talk will explore new directions in the study of Chinese land, environment, and law in modern period. Speaker Bio: Tristan Brown received his AB from Harvard College and his MA and PhD (Expected May 2017) from Columbia University.
