Event Description:

In any given week of news, even in less divisive times, questions about the past--both of recent times and more distantly historical events--often figure prominently. This is true in almost every nation and society, and certainly in the United States. In the last year alone, American public culture has been gripped by the recurrence of debates about Confederate memorials and monuments, by arguments about the history of racial discrimination and white supremacy. There have been urgent discussions about how to interpret the embedded historical worldview embodied in the slogan "Make America Great Again".

People around the world have been called to remember the history of war on the Korean peninsula. Americans and others have been reviewing the history of natural disasters and responses to them by government, humanitarian organizations and corporations. The history of postwar organizations dedicated to peace and security and of the evolution of trade agreements since the Great Depression have been a key part of discussions of Brexit, NAFTA, the Paris Climate Accord, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

As the chair of the Department of History at Swarthmore, I'd like to invite any and all interested Swarthmore undergraduates to join me for a regular series of informal discussions of history in the news, called History Matters.

Every second or third week or so, I'll be at Eldridge Commons for an hour or so in the evening. There is no formal agenda, though I may have a few ideas about what seems like an important issue from the previous week or two of news. We don't have to decide anything or create policies. There are no quizzes or homework.

Come and chat whether you know nothing about history or are fascinated by the study of the past--we'll keep the discussion loose and follow whatever threads seem interesting.

Our first History Matters will be this coming Wednesday, September 13, from 7-8pm, in the Eldridge Commons. Look for the History Matters sign and take a seat. Come as you can, leave when you want.
