Event Description
Michael Cothren, Scheuer Family Professor of Humanities and chair of the department of art, will speak on Teaching Art History in an Era of Globalism: Liberal Arts, Visual Literacy, and Social Responsibility. During the more than 30 years that Cothren has taught art history at Swarthmore, disciplinary definitions and pedagogical practices have undergone significant re-evaluation and transformation. Today, art history is too often cited as an example of irrelevancy in higher education. Not so! Studying art within an historical framework provides a critical opportunity to prepare undergraduates to become responsible citizens in an increasingly global, multicultural, and visual world. How can the history of art help prepare our students to become leaders? What lessons can be learned from the study of Giotto and Caravaggio? Why are these two of Cothren's favorite artists?
