Selections from the Rare Book Room and the Michael M. Rea Collection of Short Stories.

Michael Rea, an art collector, book collector, devotee of the short story, and founder of the prestigious Rea Award for the Short Story, donated a portion of his book collection to Swarthmore College and within this collection are first editions and beautifully illustrated works by Ambrose Bierce, O. Henry, and Edgar Allen Poe, as well as an assortment of prize winning short story anthologies.

Edgar Allen Poe, Ambrose Bierce, and O. Henry may seem at first a curious cluster of writers. However, they were all masters of the American short story who shared a peculiar delight in morbid ruminations and the often grim state of the human condition. Enigmatic men, haunted by their own demons, their capacity to craft stories still draws readers today.

This survey of selected works in oil, gouache, collage, and photography highlights the artist's decades-long exploration of a visual language for emotional, analytical, and physiological processes.

Titles such as My Big Amygdala and Axon hint at the larger processes that shape (or confound) perception. Rather than offering an autobiographical narrative, Keeton searches for universal truths about vulnerability and resilience—a rich visual journey of experiment and discovery.

Join Andrew Bunting, Curator of the Scott Arboretum, for a series of free tours at the Scott Arboretum. "A Walk with the Curator" program, previously only available to interns of the Scott Arboretum, provides an in-depth look at the collections, gardens, and plant selections through the eyes of the man responsible for curating the collection. Andrew Bunting will discuss the most recent accessions acquired for the collection, why plants were removed from the collection and maybe should be removed from your garden, as well as the latest garden designs at the Scott Arboretum. The tours are one Monday each month from 2:30 to 3:30 pm, and the topics are the curator's preference.

The tour will begin at the Scott Arboretum offices and is free and open to the public. In case of inclement weather, the tour will be canceled. For more information, please call the Scott Arboretum offices at (610) 328-8025.

Lecture by Adrienne Asche '69, the Edward & Robin Milstein Professor of Bioethics at Yeshiva University and Professor of Epidemiology & Population Health and Family & Social Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Her work focuses on the ethical, political, psychological, and social implications of human reproduction and the family.

She is the co-editor of Prenatal Testing and Disability Rights and The Double-Edged Helix: Social Implications of Genetics in a Diverse Society.

She received her doctorate in social psychology from Columbia University, was a member of the Board of the American Society for Bioethics & Humanities, the Clinton Task Force on Health Care Reform, and the Ethical, Legal, & Social Implications Policy Planning Group of the National Human Genome Research Institute.

She is a board member of the Society of Jewish Ethics and the American Civil Liberties Union, a fellow at the Hastings Center, and a member of the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law.

Do you understand the role your emotions play in how you see yourself and others? Are you easily upset when frustrated by difficult people or tasks? In challenging conversations, do you listen carefully in order to understand the other person's point of view? Are your relationships as meaningful as you would like them to be?

In this one-day session, Dr. Marie Amey-Taylor, Assistant Vice-President of Human Resources at Temple University and Associate Director of Temple's newly created Academic Center of Research in Diversity, will help participants address these and other related questions.

She will define emotional intelligence and describe the advantages of leveraging emotional intelligence in professional and interpersonal interactions.

Participants will identify and assess their abilities in each of the model's four quadrants - awareness of self, self-management/regulation, awareness of others, and adeptness in interpersonal relations and situations.

They will also determine their own social/interpersonal styles and practice building their communication skills. This will include practice with their abilities to "style flex", or to modify one's interactional style to facilitate communication with others whose styles may be similar or different from one's own.

Participants will obtain a pre assessment of their emotional intelligence. Dr Amey-Taylor will be using Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry. Participants will receive a
copy of the book.

As of Friday, October 30, we are forming the Oriental Dance Coalition. This is a group of dancers and dancers-to-be who will get together to practice and learn from each other. There will be great Arabic music suitable for great belly dancing.

*This is not a class. You are welcome to drop by at anytime during the session. Showing up on time is not important. You can also come on any day or days of your choice. No commitments required.

PROMOTING A DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE

For Faculty Chairs and Staff Supervisors

Nearly every college faces the challenges associated with substance abuse in the workplace. This seminar addresses the impact of workplace substance abuse, the signs and symptoms of drug use, and the faculty chair’s/staff supervisor’s role in communicating and enforcing College policy. The presenter will review the process for initiating a supervisor/mandatory referral to Carebridge Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and highlight the key role Human Resources and the EAP provides in supporting supervisors to promote a drug free workplace.

Lecture, Abstracts of Intimacy by Darby English, University of Chicago.

Among other subjects this talk will consider two 1971 exhibitions of abstract art—one at the Whitney Museum of American Art and another at a disused movie house in a blighted zone of Houston, Texas—which momentarily reconstituted high modernism as a progressive front in the struggle for civil rights, at once presenting abstract art on its own terms and as an ameliorative response to the increasingly polarized situation of the races in the US.

Professor English is Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago and author of How to See a Work of Art in Total Darkness (MIT Press, 2007). He is currently working on a book about about later 20th-century abstraction in America.

The Wister Center has been an unfolding story for many years. This fall the Scott Arboretum is excited to open the doors to this new facility. Dan Russoniello, AIA, LEED AP and partner of Archer & Buchanan Architecture, Ltd., has been an integral part of this project from the beginning. Dan will illustrate the original concept of the Wister Center and how it has become an important symbol of sustainability and good citizenship for the Scott Arboretum. He will delve into the sustainable design strategies used and how they work towards achieving a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Join us to learn about and tour this exciting new building!

Dan Russoniello is the Partner-in-Charge of Archer & Buchanan’s Institutional Projects Team http://www.archerbuchanan.com/. His experience, following an academic career distinguished by numerous awards, honors and fellowships, includes more than 25 years of professional practice at nationally recognized architectural firms based in Philadelphia. His work focuses on the planning and design of creatively conceived commercial and institutional projects, many for major university and private school clients.

Dan is integrally involved in all phases of each project from conceptual design through construction administration, as well as coordination with building owners and varied user groups. His thorough knowledge and understanding of the work, role, and interplay of diverse specialists such as consulting engineers, construction managers, contractors, and construction trades contribute significantly to expeditious and cost-efficient project coordination and management.

In addition to the new Wister Center for the Scott Arboretum, Dan’s current projects are the design, implementation and construction of Immaculata University’s new stadium and associated amenities and team structures, and expansion master planning for the Amelia S. Givin Library in Mt. Holly Springs, Pennsylvania.

"Using Behavioral Economics to Improve Health Behaviors" by Kevin Volpp, MD, PhD
In days gone by, it was commonly assumed that people behaved as described in economic textbooks as rational expected utility maximizers. Over the past two decades, behavioral economists have refined our understanding of decision making by incorporating insights from psychology in economics. This has highlighted several common decision errors such as present-biased preferences, insensitivity to probabilities, framing effects, loss aversion, status quo or default biases, and anticipated regret, all of which help explain why people have difficulty giving up self-harmful behaviors such as smoking even when they want to quit. In this talk , I will describe some of these biases and discuss how interventions can be designed that take account of these biases in areas ranging from defaults to information provision to the design of financial incentives for healthy behaviors.

Dr. Kevin Volpp holds a Ph.D. from the Wharton School of Business, and also an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Center for Health Services at the Wharton School of Business, as well as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is also on the faculty of the VA Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion, and is an Attending Physician at the Philadelphia Veterans Medical Center.
Dr. Volpp publishes regularly in top medical journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, or the New England Journal of Medicine, and he has also published in top business journals such as the Journal of Consumer Research. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, and many large research grants.
Dr.Volpp’s research lies at the intersection of economics and health care. In particular, he studies how financial incentives, and psychological incentives studied in behavioral economics, can be used to tackle important health problems, such as nicotine addiction, obesity, and failure to take proscribed medications.

Please bring your miniatures to the study break on Thurs., Nov. 12 from 7-9 PM in the Kitao Galllery so that they can be installed for the show opening on Fri., Nov. 13 starting at 5 PM.

Also, please remember to make a label for your miniature with your name on it - and if you'd like - techniques and/or materials used.

In 2009, XO, Oddisee, and YU came together under the name Diamond District to create a mid-90’s boom-bap themed record for the D.C., Maryland and Virginia metropolitan area. With grim beats and street savvy, politically conscious lyrics that speak to what it is like to be a black male raised in the area, Diamond District, depicts life in and around the nation’s capitol.

Joined by DJ Quatermane, they will perform as Diamond District and as individual solo artists.
